Albania

Media Freedom in Albania is the one of the lowest in the region. Journalists and media outlets are threatened by organised crime, restrictive governmental regulation and even police violence. This situation has been declining year on year, with journalists subject to increasingly violent attacks and the growing trend among private individuals to buy large stakes in various outlets to promote personal or political agendas.

Recently, Albania’s Special Anti-Corruption and Organized Crime Structure (SPAK), which investigates high-level corruption and presses charges against politicians in Albania, has been the victim of a growing disinformation campaign that seeks to discredit SPAK’s crucial work.
