BFMI marks two years

BFMI was created to monitor developments across the Balkans and inform Western political audiences about the threats to democracy and peace due to the declining information environment.

During the past two years we have conducted research and raised awareness into overlooked structural issues and market manipulation of the media sector across the Balkans. We have also fostered a strong network of local partners and key political stakeholders, united in the belief that media freedom is a crucial aspect of a thriving democracy. We need these networks more than ever. Disinformation and propaganda continue to undermine democratic processes throughout the region. Meanwhile, independent media outlets face mounting political and financial pressure, putting their ability to report on matters of public interest at risk.

These challenges demand sustained and focused efforts from civil society and policy makers. By working together there is reason to believe that change is possible.
