Euronews responds to BFMI but will not act on problematic partners
Euronews has responded to BFMI's questions over concerns regarding its partners in Bulgaria and Serbia. TV Europa, partner in Bulgaria is owned by an alleged arms dealer. While Telekom Srbija, Euronews' partner in Serbia is a state-owned telecoms which evidence suggests has become a key tool for authoritarian President Aleksandar Vucic to control the media.
Euronews is adamant that there is no risk to editorial independence for its two Balkan brand affiliates. "All safeguards were put in place to ensure that our brand and our values may not be compromised and that journalists may work freely, in line with our very high standards of journalism", Euronews said in its response.
The letter concludes that should either Euronews Bulgaria or Euronews Serbia be "compromised" their respective partners, "we would not hesitate to cease all cooperation with them." BFMI is ready to make sure Euronews stays true to its word should any such situation arise.
Our position remains unchanged. The decision to partner with TV Europa and Telekom Srbija leaves these two branded affiliates seriously vulnerable to influence. We have far less confidence than Euronews that the safeguards described will be sufficient and will continue to monitor closely the activities of both Euronews Bulgaria and Euronews Serbia.
