Greece
BFMI is deeply troubled by the media freedom situation in Greece, which is experiencing one of the most severe deteriorations in the region. As the 'sick man of Europe' regarding media freedom, Greece has fallen to the bottom of the EU rankings in this critical area.
Journalists in Greece are beleaguered by relentless pressures from both governmental and business sectors, highlighted by incidents such as the Pegasus wiretapping scandal and an alarmingly high frequency of SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation). These conditions have nurtured an environment where self-censorship among journalists is increasingly common.
The media landscape in Greece is largely controlled by a few powerful business tycoons, many of whom are also involved in the shipping industry and own sports teams. Their media outlets frequently serve as platforms to further their own interests, exerting undue influence on politicians, challenging competitors, and silencing critics. Despite these challenges, civil society organisations continue to champion the cause of press freedom and engage in critical investigative journalism. However, they too face significant opposition from these powerful circles and government entities.
