Croatia
While Croatia enjoys a relatively open media landscape compared to others in the region, issues surrounding the protection and operational freedom of journalists persist. Croatian journalists are regularly subject to threats, physical violence, and legal harassment (SLAPPs), especially when reporting on organised crime. The government not only falls short in safeguarding journalists but also appears to endorse such hostilities.
BFMI has raised alarms about the current government's efforts to overhaul the media environment. Proposed changes, including the 'anti-leak' bill and a new media law, threaten to significantly restrict journalists' work, undermine editorial integrity, and foster a culture of self-censorship.
