Slovenia
The media landscape in Slovenia is diverse and growing. However, the ownership structures behind many media entities are often opaque, with significant stakes held by both state-owned enterprises and business interests. This situation renders the media susceptible to undue influence, a situation particularly pronounced among local outlets which are regularly co-opted by incumbent mayors. Journalists frequently face pressure from politicians and business leaders due to their critical coverage and corruption investigations.
BFMI has expressed significant concerns over the increasing political encroachment on public service media, especially regarding Radiotelevizija Slovenija (RTV SLO). The Janša administration (2020-22) saw the broadcaster's governing bodies and editorial policy influenced by political appointees.
BFMI welcomes the new government’s efforts to reverse these actions and continues to monitor the implementation of reforms within the public broadcasting sector.
