Disinformation on Meta’s Platforms

About

Amid growing authoritarianism and ethnic tension in the region, a BFMI report explores how social media channels, and in particular those of Meta, the parent company of Facebook, have been used to spread disinformation and consolidate the grip on power of authoritarian leaders in Serbia and the semi-autonomous region of Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The report was launched at London’s prestigious Frontline Club. A recording of the event can be accessed here.

Impact

Following the publication of the report, BFMI launched a campaign to ensure that social media organisations take urgent steps to prevent abuse of their platforms and tackle the spread of disinformation in the region.

  • BFMI briefed Nicholas Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, about the role of Facebook in promoting disinformation in the region.

  • BFMI continues to engage with senior policy officers at Meta.

“BFMI’s report is one of the most serious researches made on the Balkan media market. Its findings are relevant to many European markets, beyond Bulgaria, Serbia and North Macedonia.”
